Wow! I actually did something 3 days in a row! Here is my third apple. Leave it to me to not follow class instructions. So, I made this one back lit from above. Makes for interesting shadows coming forward and then the shadows reflect back up onto the apple. I never noticed the reflected shadows before. Very interesting. I also went hog-wild crazy and added some background. I am learning how to “see” shadows which will be very helpful with other projects.
Soon, I will need to put the apples aside and dive into the baby face commission I have started. She is someone’s precious angel, but, Shhh! the painting is a surprise gift!
My second day doing apples. This one I setup myself with a real apple and lighting. I was having a problem with the shadows and highlights. I think this was due to having two light sources and not enough contrast. It really is hard to draw what you actually see and not what you think you see.
I am taking an online class with Will Kemp, How to Draw Light and Shadow. Lesson one – draw and apple. I think I might draw an apple everyday and see what I come up with…could be fun. Maybe I will draw/paint a HUGE apple – I am absolutely positive that someone would love to have a 48×48 apple to hang on their wall, 🙂
Standing on my dock looking west, this is what you see. This was my first and only plein air piece. I use acrylics, so standing on a dock in full sun made for quick work. The paint dried almost immediately so I used a palette knife for the majority of the piece to get some quick color down. This piece was shown at the “One Size Fits All” Show in Santa Rosa Beach, FL.

State Road 20 runs along the top of Choctawhatchee Bay and beyond. As you travel along here you see pine forests where some of the trees have been removed. I love the way the single trees in the field look just standing there as if they have beaten the odds some how and stand strong and proud. Blah, blah, blah… they make interesting exercises in showing perspective. This one is very colorful. I was experimenting with sky color and clouds. One day, I plan on doing this image in muted earth tones – maybe.

This was a fun piece to do. It was a rainy Saturday afternoon and I just felt like playing with some color to brighten my day. It worked! I found my high for the day.

Today, I am working on a Baby Face commission. What Joy! Working with beautiful baby pictures and designing an image that will have personal meaning to a grandfather. Shhh! it is a surprise.
Also, I am fishing off my dock – last night something took my bait and ran out ALL of my line until the reel was empty and the line broke. Yikes! It must have been something large!
Later today, I will be sailing in the bay. My hope is I can catch the North Wind going out and as the wind shifts to the South, I will have an easy downwind run back home. Wish me luck since I have to be back by 3p to get to our evening party at the marina.
I just love this little Happy Sunflower. It is so colorful and cheerful. It really does need a good home.

This was my first landscape painting. I created it August 2013 for the One Size Fits All art show in Santa Rosa Beach. It is 10×10 on a board panel. I struggled with clouds, trees and water, painting 4 or five renditions of this image until I had something I liked. I learned a lot doing this painting.
It currently resides with a friend who has become one of my collectors.
