I created this piece for the Celebrate the Master show that will be held at the Chautauqua Center of NWF State College in DeFuniak Springs, FL. We were asked to copy or create a painting in a style of a master artist. I had no idea which artist to choose, then I noticed a sticky note on the window in my studio with the name Jawlensky written on it. So, I went online and found Jawlenskly’s mystic heads. Very cool stuff.
In this painting the face on the right is from “Emmy Scheyer” painting by Jawlensky. The face on the left is my creation.
Fun! is all I can say. After struggling with my commission piece for months, I did this piece. It was loose, free and creative.
I find working on commission pieces extremely challenging. My normal process of choosing what I want to paint does not apply and more planning, analyzing and second guessing myself come into the process. Instead of just looking at a painting from my perspective, I try to think how someone else will view it. Then everything gets messy. I need to pull back and only look at my painting from my eyes/feelings/perspective/experience and stop trying to think how someone else will view something.
I am painting an anniversary present for a friend of a friend that I have never met which is a landscape of a place I have never been AND I do not have great photos. Thank God for the internet and Google Earth. I am trying to capture that newlywed feeling of Hope and Love.
I hope to finish this today. My challenge at this point is to not rework everything again and add the backlit highlights and shadows. Wish me luck. Since this is a surprise, I will not be posting images until much later.
I love this boathouse that sits at the end of Mallet Bayou at 331. I made this painting in trade for some frames that Bobby made for me. Now, Bobby will have to make a frame for this. 🙂
Congratulations go out to Brenda Osborne, member of the newly formed Freeport Art League on being selected as the July “Artist Of The Month”. We have a show coming up called “Celebrate the Masters”. We are supposed to recreate a masterpiece or make our own in a style similar to a master. This one is by Jawlensky one of his “Mystical Heads” series. I may try it again. It does not have the same punch as his does. Mine is too sweet.

A little scene from along the road in Freeport, Florida. This is a larger version of one I had done several months ago. It is also brighter. When doing a painting again, it is interesting to see how I choose to paint it and the colors used. Even though it is the same scene, they are different.

This scene is from one of my photographs. I learned a lot about light key with this one. It was a challenge to get the pink clouds to work. The final touch that pulled it together was adding some warmth to the clouds. Pink Orange and Purple!
This painting was supposed to go in my office. I was going to glue it to a cabinet door, but it came out too nice so I framed it and put it in a gallery in Micanopy.
Now on to my next colorful adventure!

When kayaking in the bayous I sometimes feel like I am in a mountain valley. This is due to the tall trees on either side of you and the distant clouds. This is the bayou in the early morning as the sun is hitting the trees and the morning shower is gathering in the distance. Very peaceful.
This painting is acrylic on a museum quality hardboard 1.5 inch cradled panel. 12″x16″.
Current Location: Freeport, FL, Townhall, Featured Artist of the Month
I have been looking at this gladiolus and wanting to paint it. Finally, I took the leap and did so. I used a different technique. I did not draw or measure anything. I just concentrated on shape color and light. This technique is very freeing and much quicker than trying to reproduce a flower. I do believe it came out much better than if I had look at it as a flower instead of shapes.
(I am still challenged getting a good photograph – Argh – Yes it is a little blurry)

This is “After The Rain”. The afternoon rain has just passed. The sun is starting to peak out making the grass bright green in contrast to the dark clouds. The image on the left is where I started with this painting, laying out the basic colors. I like the violet clouds. I might do another one with violet. Oh, the color possibilities are endless. It is so hard to choose.
I apologize for the photos. I just can’t seem to get a good photo that is in focus and is the correct color. Argh!
